Secrets of the Precision Manufacturing of a Professional Golf Ball

The following is an analysis of the entire process of golf ball manufacturing in line with modern industrial standards.

I. Manufacturing of ball cores: creating a power "engine"

The flying distance of a golf ball depends mainly on the core.The manufacturing of ball cores is a complex chemical cross-linking process.

Ingredients and blending: The core material is highly resilient polybutadiene, with the addition of zinc oxide, peroxides, and metal salts such as zinc methacrylate. These additives determine the hardness and resilience of the core.

Spherical molding: Extrude the blended rubber into a cylindrical rubber block.

High temperature vulcanization:The rubber block is placed in a precision mold and heated under pressure at a high temperature of about 150°C-170°C.

At this time, chemical cross-linking occurs between the molecules, forming a solid spherical core with extremely strong energy feedback.

Grinding treatment: Due to the overflow (cape) at the mold seam, the vulcanized ball core needs to be treated by a centerless grinder to ensure that its roundness error is controlled within a minimum range.

II. Trunk Layer Integration: Stability Management of Multi-layer Structures

For 3-layer or 4-layer competitive-grade balls, one or more layers of Ionomer or elastomeric material need to be coated on the outside of the ball core.

Injection Mold Coating: Using a precision injection molding machine, the molten relay layer material is evenly injected into the mold and wrapped around the ball core.

Concentricity check:This is the hardest step in manufacturing. If the ball core is offset during the wrapping process, it will cause the sphere’s flight trajectory to be unstable.

We use die positioning pin technology to ensure that the concentricity deviation of each layer structure is minimized.

III. Shell Molding: Dimples and Tactile Molding

The housing not only protects the sphere, but also directly determines the aerodynamic properties of the ball and the green feel.

Surlyn Housing:Mainly through the injection molding process (Injection Molding).

This material is extremely durable, suitable for junior and intermediate balls and gift custom balls.

Urethane housing:High-performance professional balls are mostly casting.

Liquid urethanes are injected into molds with pitted lines that cure to form an extremely thin and soft skin that provides excellent ball control.

Aerodynamic design: Dimples on the mold surface have undergone thousands of wind tunnel tests.

The precision of the mold determines the consistency of the sharpness and depth of the edge of the cavity, which is the key to ensuring the wind resistance of the sphere.

IV. Surface reprocessing: from semi-finished products to finished products

The surface of the newly demolded sphere is rough and requires multiple fine steps:

Defronting and cleaning: Remove mold line marks and surface impurities by vibrating grinding or chemical cleaning.

Primers and spraying: In order to enhance wear resistance and visual gloss, spheres need to be sprayed with specialized UV-resistant primers and high-gloss varnishes.

Drying and curing: pass through infrared or ultraviolet drying channels in a dust-free workshop to ensure that the coating is uniform, hard and not prone to yellowing.

V. Physical Performance Testing: Quality Defense Line for B-end Customers

Prior to delivery, each batch of product must pass precision testing in the laboratory:

Compression test: Ensure that the hardness of the sphere meets the specifications and meets the requirements of different swing speeds.

Cor (coefficient of recovery) test: simulate high-speed strikes, measure rebound kinetic energy, and ensure that the ball reaches the standard speed.

Impact resistance test: Simulate a real high-frequency hit to check if the skin will crack or peel.

Specification Testing: Strictly benchmarked to USGA/R&A standards for 100% automatic sorting of weights (up to 1.620 ounces) and diameters (up to 1.680 inches).
